The Moving Out Collection is about taking stories of failure and unworthiness and turning them on their heads! I grew up poor and part of growing up poor for me was moving 10 times before I reached the age of 16, including being evicted twice, living in a barn (a nice one, albeit) and a garage with my 6 siblings. That instability and uncertainty followed me into adulthood. Shortly before the pandemic, I started painting as a way to have something just for me, but it grew into a passion for telling stories through visual art of all sorts! 

The specific materials used in this collection are packing materials to signify the moving I did, but they also signify ephemeral things. Cardboard, tape and other packing materials are considered trash after they’ve been used once or twice, but you and I are more than that, more than our stories, especially the negative ones. I aim to take the things I grew up being embarrassed and even ashamed of and flipping them on their heads to make something beautiful! You can too! Start telling new, better stories to yourself now….not tomorrow!

Life is messy and beautiful and hard, but it’s something we have all experienced as humans; life on this planet.

We are all interconnected whether we like it or not, so we might as well accept that and spread peace, joy and love!

Life is full of ups and downs, but the sweet moments are so much sweeter when we’ve experienced some sour. The title for this is inspired by my experience as a parent. I have two wonderful daughters who are often sweet, but, like all of us, sometimes sour. The color and composition also invokes popular sweet and sour candy.

Flowers have always been a big part of my life. They are used to celebrate in times of happiness and to commemorate in times of sadness. Some are soft and delicate and some are sturdy and thorny, but all are beautiful in their way. Life’s greatest joys are more joyous when we have known life’s bitterness. This painting represents both sides of life.
